The Founding
Horses for Autism was founded in 2005 by Johnny Taboada, who shared a deep love for both horse racing and those on the autism spectrum. With this in mind, they set out to create an organization that would provide a unique and meaningful experience for individuals with autism and special needs.
Early Growth
As Horses for Autism began to establish itself in the equine world, a special horse emerged to pave the way for the organization's growth. In 2008, Autism Awareness made waves by winning the prestigious Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows, capturing the attention of racing fans and industry professionals alike. The following year, he secured another victory by winning the Grade 3 Berkeley Stakes. As the first horse to gain recognition and success based on name recognition alone, Autism Awareness became a symbol of hope and promise for Horses for Autism. Though he passed away in 2013, his legacy lives on, inspiring the organization to continue making strides in the world of horse racing.
In recent years, another star horse has stepped up to the plate to continue the work of Autism Awareness, becoming a shining example of the future of Horses for Autism. Touched by Autism has made a name for himself in the racing world, winning the Oakland Stakes in 2019 at Golden Gate Fields and earning over $300,000 in prize money. As he transitions into his role as a stallion, Touched by Autism represents a new chapter in the story of Horses for Autism, one filled with promise, potential, and endless possibilities for the future.
Current and Future Impact
At Horses for Autism, we are committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those on the autism spectrum. Though we don't currently offer services, we have big plans for the future. Our vision is to provide a welcoming and comforting outdoor space where individuals on the spectrum can connect with horses, nature, and each other. We believe that spending time in nature and interacting with animals like horses can have a profound positive impact on mental health and well-being.
Our partnership with Easterbrook Farm in San Miguel, CA allows us to provide this space and offer equine therapy as a means of healing and growth. In addition, we are excited to have Touched By Autism, our broodmares, and first crop of foals at the farm as they serve as a reminder of the power of horses in our mission. We are dedicated to making a lasting impact in the autism community and cannot wait to see the positive changes that will result from our efforts.

$1,000 purchase from 2006 CTBA September Sale. Winner of the G3 El Camino Real Derby and G3 All-American Stakes, Autism Awareness will forever be the pioneer of Horses for Autism.
Butterfly Soul
Henny Hughes - Zada Rae, by Unbridled's Song
$2,000 purchase from 2011 Keeneland September Sale. Winner of the Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex, Butterfly Soul is remembered as the first Horses For Autism filly to win a stakes race.
Touched By Autism
Sierra Sunset - Beau's Gem, by Beau Genius
$2,700 purchase from 2014 CTBA August Sale. Winner of the Oakland Stakes and G3-placed in the All-American Stakes, Touched By Autism has become the first Horses for Autism stallion.
