Raising Autism Awareness Through Horse Racing & Thoroughbred Aftercare

Welcome to Horses for Autism, where we believe in the transformative power of horses and the importance of second chances—both for individuals on the autism spectrum and retired Thoroughbred racehorses.

Our story began in 2005 when Johnny Taboada, owner of Taboada Racing Stable, started advocating for autism awareness. His son, Renzo, was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, inspiring Johnny’s lifelong commitment to raising awareness.

At Horses for Autism, we take pride in our mission of autism awareness and Thoroughbred Aftercare. Every unraced horse in our program is given a name that includes the word “autism,” reinforcing our dedication to spreading awareness within the racing industry. Beyond the track, we ensure that our racehorses have a secure and well-managed retirement, transitioning them into new careers or providing lifelong sanctuary.

We work closely with Daehling Ranch in Elk Grove, California, where multiple broodmares are in foal to future Horses for Autism racehorses. In addition, we currently provide aftercare for seven retired Thoroughbreds, giving them a safe and structured environment where they can thrive beyond their racing careers.

By combining our passion for horse racing with responsible aftercare and autism awareness, we are building a community where horses and people alike can thrive, grow, and achieve their fullest potential.

RISING RATES

According to USA Today, autism rates rose again between 2018 and 2020, the most recent year data is available, up from 1 in 44 children to 1 in 36. This means awareness and knowledge of autism is improving.

EQUINE IMPACT

Horses have been used in therapeutic settings for centuries. Equine therapy has been shown to have a positive impact on individuals with autism, including improving communication skills and social interactions.

REPRESENTATION

Each unraced horse that comes through our organization is given a name that includes the word “Autism”. As well, these horses are outfitted with silks and racing accessories that incorporate light blue and rainbow colors, as well as puzzle pieces, in order to promote awareness. This tradition will continue with all future horses that we work with.

SYMBOLISM

The puzzle piece was first used as a symbol in 1963 to represent the complexity and variability of the condition. The light blue color was later adopted as a symbol of hope, calmness, and understanding. Today, both are used by all around the world to promote awareness and acceptance of autism, and to celebrate the unique talents and abilities of individuals on the spectrum.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Horses for Autism?

Horses for Autism is a non-profit organization under the George Noyes Foundation dedicated to providing a second chance for retired Thoroughbred racehorses while promoting autism awareness. Our mission extends beyond horse racing—we ensure that retired racehorses receive the aftercare, rehabilitation, and support they need to transition into new careers or enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

Through our Thoroughbred Aftercare efforts, we are building a program that not only protects these incredible athletes but also fosters meaningful connections between horses and individuals with autism. As we grow, our future initiatives will include equine-assisted activities, social events, and community programs that provide enrichment and support for individuals and families affected by autism.

The vision of Horses for Autism is to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for both retired Thoroughbred racehorses and individuals on the autism spectrum. We are committed to ensuring that retired racehorses receive the aftercare, rehabilitation, and opportunities they deserve while using their second careers to promote autism awareness.

Our goal is to make a lasting impact by advocating for responsible Thoroughbred Aftercare, raising awareness about autism, and fostering a community where both horses and individuals with autism can thrive. Although we are in the early stages of our journey, we are dedicated to working diligently toward fulfilling this vision and making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Horses for Autism is a proud partner organization of the George Noyes Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit, which enables us to accept donations and further our mission of supporting individuals on the autism spectrum to support our mission.

Horses for Autism was inspired by the founder, Johnny Taboada’s personal experience of having a son named Renzo with autism. This led Johnny to become an advocate for autism awareness and use his passion for horse racing to raise funds for autism-related causes.

Horses for Autism uses horse racing as a unique way to engage and empower individuals on the autism spectrum, providing opportunities to develop skills, increase self-esteem, and build social connections.
